News from ICE’s Sponsor Child

ICE is proud to sponsor a pupil in Vietnam through the Lifestart Foundation and and we were pleased to receive the following letter, providing us with more information about the pupil we sponsor and the help he is receiving.
My name is Doan Thi Kim Hong (Phuong). I am the Assistant In Country Manager of the Lifestart Foundation.
On behalf of the Lifestart Foundation, I would like to formally say thank you for your contribution in supporting An’s seven year educational scholarship. This scholarship will help him with his school fees, books and uniforms and will allow him to complete his education to year 12.
I have included information below about this educational scholarship student who has been selected by the Lifestart Foundation to benefit from the funding you have donated.

Cong An is a student who is excellent at Maths. He is 12 years old and is in grade 7 this September. He studies 5 hours per day at home after school. He also does house work for two hours per day, this includes cleaning the room, cooking and washing clothes. Most young children in Vietnam have these house duties to help the family as their parents or family members are working very long hours, 7 days per week.

The government school in Vietnam is only for a half day. Students that receive a Lifestart Foundation scholarship are able to attend the all important extra classes every afternoon. Without these extra classes students cannot achieve and maintain a high level.
Completing Year 12 without doing extra subjects would be impossible. It means that this scholarship will enable An to study extra classes in Physics and Literature. He always tries his best to be a good student in his class. He is the head of a group in his class and wants to become a building engineer.
He is living with his mum in a small rental room as his parents have divorced 1 year ago. His mum is working as a tailor and her salary is 2,000,000 VND equal to $100 USD per month. As she is working long hours per day An spends 1 hour doing house work which includes cleaning the house, washing dishes and cooking.
They have simple furniture in their room and a very old bicycle. It took them more than 2 hours to cycle to the Lifestart Foundation Workshop for An’s scholarship interview.
We wish An all the best in his educational endeavours.
